Helena, Mont.- On National Apprenticeship Day, the Montana Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) proudly celebrates the expansion of the state’s Registered Apprenticeship program and significant legislative victories achieved during the 2025 Session, reinforcing Montana’s commitment to workforce development.
This week, I urge all Montanans—students, job seekers, businesses, educators, and community leaders—to explore the lifechanging power of apprenticeship,” said Commissioner Swanson. “It’s more than a training initiative; it’s a proven pathway to opportunity, prosperity, and enduring success. By connecting individuals with meaningful careers and empowering businesses to cultivate skilled talent, apprenticeship strengthens our communities and fuels Montana’s economic future.”
Montana’s Registered Apprenticeship program delivers tangible results. With 3,150 active apprentices statewide − participation has surged by 25% over the past five years under Governor Gianforte’s leadership. This growth reflects the program’s value to both workers and employers.
Currently, 680 Montana businesses leverage apprenticeship as a cornerstone of their workforce strategy, training the next generation of skilled professionals in high-demand industries such as construction, healthcare, and technology. Impressively, 86% of Montana apprentices remained with their sponsor employer five years after program completion, delivering a strong return on investment for businesses that prioritize internal talent development.
The financial benefits for apprentices are equally compelling. Graduates of Montana’s apprenticeship programs earn an average of $11,700 more per year than the statewide average salary, with earnings rising to $22,750 above the average just five years post-completion.
Looking ahead, apprenticeship is poised to meet Montana’s future workforce needs. Over the next decade, 58% of projected job growth − equating to more than 15,000 annual job openings − will occur in apprenticeable occupations. The Registered Apprenticeship program is well-positioned to fill these roles, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled workers to drive Montana’s economy.
Both bills, now awaiting the Governor’s signature, reflect bipartisan support for building a stronger, more prosperous Montana through apprenticeship. As DLI celebrates National Apprenticeship Day, it reaffirms its commitment to expanding opportunities for workers and businesses alike, ensuring a bright future for the state.
