HELENA-The Montana Department of Labor & Industry announced today it will host the Jobs for Montana’s Graduates (JMG) annual LEAD Montana Conference in Helena on Tuesday. The conference recognizes high school students for their pursuit of academic excellence and leadership development.
“This annual conference brings together more than 200 students from over 20 schools across the state,” said Montana Department of Labor & Industry Commissioner Laurie Esau. “These students are the next generation of our Montana workforce, and JMG helps empower them to achieve their highest potential.”
JMG is a Department of Labor & Industry program dedicated to teaching students the skills they need for college and career readiness. This annual conference provides an opportunity for students to meet with public and private business leaders and expand their leadership skills. Each year the LEAD Montana Conference brings hundreds of students from schools across Montana together to participate in training sessions and engage with fellow students. Students then bring the guidance and instruction they learned home with them to share with their local JMG chapter and school.
Sherry Winn will be the conference facilitator this year. She will engage the students in developmental and physical activities centered around connection, communication, and leadership styles. Winn is a Championship Basketball Coach and a two-time Olympian who is now a professional speaker and has spoken at events for StubHub, AnyTime Fitness, New York Life, Edward Jones, and Technicolor.
Mike Jetty with the Office of Public Instruction (OPI) Indian Education for All, will lead JMG students in an introduction about how leadership takes many forms, and will provide a cultural overview of the American Indian tribes and communities that make up Montana.
Students participate in a logo contest during the year, individually designing their own JMG logos. The winners of this year’s contest will be announced at the conference. Additionally, four select JMG students who submitted leadership development essays to a review committee will be announced at LEAD. The four students will receive an opportunity to attend the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA) in Washington D.C. in early December 2022.
